A brief history about engagement ring designers

Wedding
and engagement rings are said to have originated in Ancient Egypt some 4,800
years ago. It was a widespread belief in those days that a vein known as the
vena amoris (or love vein) ran directly from the third finger of the left hand
straight to the heart and hence the reason why the ring is worn on that finger.
In 1477 Archduke Maximilian of Austria proposed marriage to Mary of Burgundy by
presenting her with a diamond ring, and the diamond engagement ring tradition
was born. But it wasn't until the late 19 th century when diamond mines were
discovered on the African continent that this precious stone became available to
a wider market.
In response to the increasing demand, better techniques were developed resulting
in what is now a very large industry. But with so much choice available to
us, how do you go about choosing the perfect engagement ring designer? There are
many things to think about before you spend a pile of cash. Here are a couple of
questions you need to ask yourself:
1.what shape should the diamond be?
2. What type of ring setting are you looking for?
3. Should the ring band be gold or platinum, or silver?
Most of us think that bigger is better, but this is not always so. Size is not
the only thing you should look for when choosing your diamond ring. To help
consumers, a system known as the 4Cs has been developed which classifies the
four most important characteristics of a diamond - cut, color, clarity and
carat.
Of course, all these decisions determine one factor that we all look for is the
price. But you do not necessarily have to compromise on quality to save yourself
money. You just need to know what to look for. Browse our articles about the
4c's and our diamond information page.
